Film Log: Insidious

Details here.

This has the ingredients of a good film. Several good films, to be precise: it’s rather as if someone fell asleep watching The Orphanage and woke up during Dr Strange, then channel surfed to The Ametyville Horror via The Avengers. The result is a plot which changes direction too often to really keep us on the edge of our seats (despite the very successful understated creepiness of the first twenty minutes) and a film which is, overall, a more-or-less pleasing hotch-potch of images and ideas which somehow never really gets off the ground.

Having said all that, it accomplishes a lot on its budget, which was only $1.5m – less than an episode of Lost; and it least it doesn’t end with everyone hugging each other in a church.
