A little cheese and a little whine

Film Log: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Details here.

This film is really a vehicle for Gyllenhaal and Arterton, and while both are very good, neither yet has the presence to really carry it off. A remake in about three years time would probably be a joy to behold. In the meantime, the rest of the cast is rather low-key and this has the result that whenever Ben Kingsley is on screen you find yourself thinking, “oh yes, that’s what a real actor looks like.”

Despite this, the film is very watchable and has everything a world-of-Aladdin adventure ought to have – a royal court complete with shifty vizier, a beautiful princess, rebellious peasants, ancient magic and dastardly assassins. The princess is pleasingly strong-willed and the hero shows humanity as well as strength and cunning. The action sequences, while not exactly Chinese Opera, are well choreographed and inventive. The real star of the piece though, for my money, is Alfred Molina who, as the comic relief, provides several welcome breaks from the basically linear sequence of the main plot.

If you’re a fan of the old Sinbad films, this is definitely one for you.
