A little cheese and a little whine

Film Log: How to Rob a Bank

This engaging comedy is based on the a novel premise whereby two people are trapped in a bank vault during a robbery, thereby becoming pivotal in the plans of the police, the robbers, and the criminal mastermind behind it all. It does a lot with very limited resources – a small cast and only three sets – and in fact feels like it could easily work as a two hander set entirely in the vault.

The plot has some ingenious twists although the dialog never really sparkles and occasionally lapses into Kevin Smith / Douglas Coupland style whining monologues, and although the dark subject matter is lifted by a few clever comic moments, the film is a bit too self-consciously cool to be laugh out loud funny. The final moments of the heist are a little contrived, but on the whole it’s a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.
