Film log: St Trinian’s II

Details here.

Not quite as delightful as its predecessor, this film nonetheless captures the sinister and surreal comedy of the original series in a distinctive way. After a slightly shaky start, it really hits its stride with the girls repelling an attack on the school by the villain’s henchmen, and from there on in has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. The plot follows the structure of a quest, but without any sense of increasing danger or distress, so comedy aside the film does drag a bit after the half way point. The second half is rather unevenly paced with the build-up to the (slightly unimaginative) twist in the plot a bit long-winded and the satisfying vanquishing of the villain much too short. Overall, though, there’s plenty in this film to make me want to watch it again.
